Are electric mopeds the future? We have tested the BMW CE 02

Are electric mopeds the future We have tested the BMW

The CE 02 is an electric two-wheeler that is offered either as a moped (AM) or as a light motorcycle (A1).

BMW calls it neither an e-moped nor an e-motorcycle, instead it is an “eParkourer” which is actually BMW language because it is best suited for cities and the like.

We got our hands on the moped variant.

The CE 02 boasts an innovative design and according to BMW they want to attract younger buyers and you need to be trendy to say the least to dress up the exterior.

When it comes to driving position, there are two pairs of footrests to choose from. If you use the front ones, you get a more relaxed driving position, while the rear ones ensure a slightly sportier driving position.

What separates the moped variant from the motorcycle variant is only the effect.

The motorcycle has 15 horsepower and 55 newton meters. That’s enough for a top speed of 95 knots and a range of 90 kilometers.

The moped version pumps out 5 horsepower and 55 newton meters. The top speed is 45 km/h and the range is 45 kilometers, enough to handle the everyday commute.

Both frames have a reverse mode, keyless start, and ABS on the front wheel.

Our test drive route included a Portuguese residential area, followed by a trip along the Atlantic coast, before finishing with both highway and city driving.

The electric drive means direct throttle response that would have liked to have dosed the power supply more carefully, something that would have made the moped more accommodating.

However, it is only a matter of time before you get a feel for it and the CE 02 is genuinely fun to drive while also being without various quality flaws and noise that cheaper mopeds are sometimes plagued with.

The sound from the electric motor is quite noticeable and it is impossible not to hear that it is an electric bike.

The CE 02 is experienced as rap and the top speed of 45 km/h is quickly reached, which is why you learn to claw any moped rider at red lights.

Thanks to the location of the batteries, the center of gravity is very low. CE 02 is thus easy to change direction with and drive slalom between fellow road users.

The BMW CE 02 aims to attract a younger target group, not least those who are attracted by electrification. When it comes to electric two-wheelers in particular, the market is somewhat more limited than in the automotive world.

The reason is that batteries encroach enormously on a motorcycle’s weight, at the same time as the price tag increases significantly. Therefore, it is wise to electrify something like a commuter bike rather than something more expensive.

In terms of price, the CE 02 in moped guise starts at SEK 79,900, which is by no means cheap. For the money, you get a moped that feels extremely robust and very fun to drive.

As a commuter vehicle, the CE 02 is well suited and electrifying two-wheeled vehicles in particular feels extremely reasonable, even if it undoubtedly affects the price negatively.

The BMW CE 02 is a convenient way to spice up everyday life with a dose of electrification. It may offer a cheap step into the BMW Motorrad family, but an expensive step into the world of mopeds.

The motto “if it tastes, it costs” can indeed be applied to the new electric two-wheeler from BMW.
