“Dumpstring” or “container diving” involves looking for recently discarded food with the intention of eating it.
Andreas Jakobsson, who is a journalist and author, has been dumping for ten years. Today, he lectures around the country to spread knowledge about food waste.
– You don’t need to worry about best before dates, it’s just ridiculous. But then I also want to convey what would need to be done to really reduce wastage, he says.
“It’s the law that’s wrong”
Dumpstring is considered illegal – but since it has never been tried in court, Andreas believes that it is not possible to determine what applies.
– If it were illegal, I don’t think it matters because then it’s the law that’s wrong. Everyone understands that it is good to save food from spoiling.
And during the hunt for food in the containers, he has encountered the police several times, but so far the response has been positive.
– Most often they have been shocked when they have seen all the food and said that it is great that you are doing it and then they have moved on.
