The return for 2023 starts to be sent out in March 2024, but you don’t have to wait until then to find out if you will get a tax refund or back tax this year.
It is already possible to calculate whether it will be a hit or a miss in the wallet, but it is not entirely simple.

Declaration 2024: Calculate your tax
Here’s how to calculate your tax for 2023.
Gather information at the Swedish Tax Agency
The first thing you need to do is gather the necessary information. Under the tab “My pages” at the Swedish Tax Agency you will find your income information, and can see how much tax has been deducted.
Here you will find the link to “Salary, pension and sick pay and more” at the Swedish Tax Agency.
You also need to collect information about:
Fees to unemployment insurance
The total amount you paid in 2023.
Interest costs
In the annual statement from your bank, you will find all the information you will need to fill in, for example interest costs.
Root and root deductions
You also need to check if you have made any square and box deductions, or any tax deductions.

Calculate the tax at the Swedish Tax Agency
During “Calculate your tax” at the Swedish Tax Agency you enter your information according to the instructions. Based on that information, you will find out your final tax.
If you also fill in how much tax you paid during the year, you will find out if you paid too much or too little tax, and then you will know if there will be a tax refund or back tax.
