Ubisoft is putting an end to its investments in VR

Disappointed by the too timid sales of Assassin’s Creed Nexus VR, Ubisoft has decided to distance itself from the virtual reality market. This is indeed what comes out of the Q&A in which Yves Guillemot participatedwithin the framework of the publication of its turnover in the 3rd fiscal quarter. The figures have not been communicated, but the CEO of Ubisoft believes that the VR market is not big enough to continue investing in it. “We think it’s fantastic hardware, but we continue to view this VR business as something we need to monitor without investing too much, until it grows sufficiently.”

There was already a drop in interest from Ubisoft regarding VR in 2022, since the game Splinter Cell VR had been canceled, although the project was in the hands of the Red Storm studio and was to be marketed exclusively on Meta Quest. This is a new blow for the virtual reality market which must separate from a partner as strong as Ubisoft, which was among the biggest allies of VR with launch projects for each new headset (PS VR , PS VR2, Oculus Rift). But the reality of the market and the overall lack of interest in VR among the general public continues to grow, even if many hope that Apple’s Vision Pro will create a new dynamic around the beginnings of the life-size Metaverse.
