Sweden and Denmark are seeking the football European Championship 2029 together.
It is now raising strong opinions in neighboring Norway.
– It is devastating, says Norwegian TV2 expert Mina Finstad Berg in a statement.
On Thursday, the decision came that Sweden and Denmark have applied for the Women’s European Football Championship in 2029. Both countries tried to get an European Championship in the Nordics in 2025 but then failed.

Now Sweden and Denmark are trying again but have chosen to do it without Finland and Norway. The Swedish Football Association, SvFF, and the Danish Football Association, DBU, have jointly submitted an application to be host countries.
– Women’s football continues to grow internationally and in Sweden both interest and practice are increasing. We look forward to creating new dreams for future generations in a championship together with Denmark, says the SvFF chairman Fredrik Reinfeldt in a statement.

The reason why the other neighboring countries are nobbed is because four countries would be too spread out for a championship.
– When we have looked at the arena situation, it is actually Denmark and Sweden that have the best conditions, says Reinfeldt to Norwegian TV2.
Norway’s reaction
The SvFF chairman and the Danish counterpart Jesper Moller has already been to Oslo to announce his decision.
– We did that out of respect, Reinfeldt admits.

But Thursday’s announcement still stirs up strong emotions in Norway.
– This is very devastating for everyone who wants to see a championship on Norwegian soil. Norway does not have the infrastructure to organize an EC on its own, says the TV2 expert My Finstad Berg.
– It is sad that they apply without Norway, but not particularly surprising.

Norskan then selects Norway’s confederation chairman Lise Klaveness as the main reason why they are nobbed.
– The Danes in particular probably think that Klaveness causes too many problems and attracts too much attention.
