Last summer it was clear that Mittuniversitetet in Östersund will start an education in Southern Sami.
Now the university announces that the first course will be held in the summer.
– In the summer, we will conduct our first summer course in Southern Sami, says Anna Olofsson, pro-rector at Mittuniversitetet, in a press release.
At the same time, the university is investing in four new positions connected to Sami education and research. These are two research positions, a central administrator for Sami issues and an assistant professor in Southern Sami.
They have also signed a new three-year collaboration agreement with the Gaaltije foundation.
– It is very gratifying that we can take further steps in the direction of strengthening our business in this way, says Olofsson.
The principal is satisfied with the investment
Anders Fällström, rector at Mittuniversitetet, is happy about the investments being made.
– As the only Swedish university in a southern Sami area, we signed a declaration of intent two years ago which means that, through our research and education, we must be part of or collaborate with the Sami community, he says and continues:
– Since then, we have invested eight million kroner with the aim of stimulating and encouraging further research, education and collaboration linked to the Sami community, as well as establishing new services, says Fällström.
