Best Foldable Phones
The Samsung Galaxy Z Fold 3 continues to set the standard for foldable phones, responding to some of the criticisms of its predecessors, while adding nice new features such as a 120Hz refresh rate for both screens. The improved durability of this foldable phone will alleviate some people’s concerns about whether the Galaxy Z Fold will be able to withstand the rigors of everyday use. Samsung has also worked with more app makers to optimize their software for the Galaxy Z Fold 3’s unique 7.6-inch folding screen.
Replacing the Galaxy Z Flip 5G, the new Galaxy Z Flip 3 does everything better. Not only is the phone more durable than before, but the cover screen has also been greatly improved. The Flip 3’s design is more fluid, with squared edges and beautiful color options. It also has some internal upgrades, including the Snapdragon 888 processor. The cameras and battery remain the same, however, and the Galaxy Z Flip 3 lacks a telephoto lens.
This foldable phone from Oppo is ahead of Samsung’s best foldable phones in a few key areas, one of which is the lack of a gap near its hinged display. When the Oppo Find N is closed, its two halves snap together, something the Galaxy Z Fold 3 doesn’t offer. But Samsung’s phone has a clear advantage in one respect – you can’t get an Oppo Find N outside of China right now. It’s a shame because it offers a great screen and stays handy even when the phone is folded. Well designed to fit in a pocket.
The Honor Magic V model has a 7.9-inch OLED panel interior display with 2272 x 1984 resolution, 90Hz refresh rate and 10.3:9 aspect ratio. This screen is a bit larger than the 7.6-inch Samsung Galaxy Z Fold 3 model. Honor says that the Magic V’s internal display is no different than using two 21:9 displays side by side.
The Huawei Mate X2 has a larger cover display that gives it more of a normal smartphone feel. The massive 8-inch interior display has edge-to-edge displays, which means you won’t find any camera cutouts to cut your line of sight. 5G support comes with the ability to use 6GHz or mmWave depending on what your carrier provides. The Mate X2 also has fast charging speeds of 55W, which helps make up for the lack of wireless charging.
Microsoft Surface Duo 2 is not actually a foldable device. Instead, it has two separate 5.3-inch panels that open up to give you an 8.3-inch workspace. You can run apps in two panels, but you’ll have to deal with a gap that runs right through the middle of your app where the screens come together. Surface Duo is better when using optimized apps where different tasks are assigned to different screens. You can also multitask by running two apps on different sides of the device.
Samsung Galaxy Z Fold 2 is the successor of the Samsung Galaxy Fold, which fixes its shortcomings and expands its design features. The Z Fold 2 is a foldable ‘innie’ with an external display for basic tasks and an internal full-screen that pops up when opened flat. This looks a lot like a traditional smartphone when folded closed with the Galaxy Z Fold 2. The interior screen opens up to 7.6 inches and both screens feature a punch-hole camera for a streamlined look.
The original Samsung Galaxy Z Flip is really handy. Updated with a 6.7-inch AMOLED screen and 2636×1080 resolution, the Z Flip appeals to a certain class of buyers. While there is a visible crease in the middle of the device in the bending area, it is difficult to see when looking directly at the device. A Flex Mode detects when the phone is half-open and automatically splits the interface into two screens for certain apps.
The Huawei Mate Xs is a very impressive device and a perfect example of the foldable concept. This is a foldable ‘outie’ with only a single external display that opens flat for an 8 inch tablet sized screen or folded closed for a 6.6 inch format. It’s also powerful with a high-end Kirin 990 chipset, 8GB of RAM, 512GB of storage, a quad-lens camera (managed by a 40MP main sensor), a 4500mAh battery, and a sleek, notchless design.
The upgraded Motorola Razr 2020 (called Motorola Razr 5G) is an expensive device that offers innovation rather than design advancements it should be. At least it looks good with a relatively large 2.7-inch external display. This screen offers software enhancements that allow you to browse key apps, text and preview selfies effectively. Being able to take selfies with the same 48MP main lens you use when the phone is open is absolutely fine.
