The technology industry is crying out for staff. 18,000 Swedish tech workers need new hires – every year, according to the industry organization Techsverige.

Constant skills shortage
According to a survey carried out by the industry association, the figures show a constant skills shortage, says Ana Andric who wrote the report.
– We see that the need for tech workers has continued to increase and that the shortage therefore persists, says Ana Andric to Svenska Dagbladet.
The need is estimated to last until the year 2028, and probably beyond. Even jobs that are not direct tech jobs but have to do with tech are also expected to be needed. It is referred to as a group with “digital excellence”.

– Digital excellence is broader than the group of tech workers. Here are occupations that are connected to but not necessarily tech. Among other things, project managers, digital communicators and business developers, says Ana Andric to the newspaper.
Instead of increasing the education of future tech employees, the government is doing the opposite, she believes, pointing to the reduction in screen time at school.
Recruits people other than Swedes
– We have a strong need for knowledge in IT and programming. But we also need to ensure that the children can navigate the digital world with tools such as source criticism and safety thinking. We wish that could be implemented already in primary school, she tells SvD.
The risk is great that labor will have to be recruited from other countries, such as India and other high-technology labor markets, when Sweden falls behind on the technology ladder. One such example is Northvolt, which has recruited many skills abroad.
