Bianca Salming’s first words after the new blockbuster – the nice comeback after the tough times: “I needed it”

Bianca Salming has returned to the all-around again.
And made it big by breaking personal bests twice in his first two races.
– It makes me happy, says Salming to SVT.

It was during the summer of 2023 that Bianca Salming left the all-around to invest wholeheartedly in the favorite event high jump again. The change came after a tough 1.5 years with dad Börje Salmings tough ALS disease and then passing away in November 2022.

Salming’s success

But now the 25-year-old has returned to the all-around again after a tough time as a high jumper and is a complete success in the pentathlon. Already in the first competition during the SM, Bianca broke a new personal best and won gold as the best in Sweden.

This weekend it was time for a new record again when Salming hit a new career best during an indoor competition in Tallinn. Salming’s fine 4,533 points was enough for a second place in the competition and a real lift on the list of Sweden’s best all-rounders of all time.

Bianca second best

Bianca Salming is now second best ever of Swedish pentathletes, only beaten by Carolina Klüft with his Swedish record of 4,948 points from 2005.
– It has felt very good! Stable, she tells Swedish Athletics about the new success.
– I needed to get a fresh start and to have a little longing. Get a change. I have had time to strengthen areas in which I was previously weaker. Even where I might have lost strength, for example for throwing, I instead had to become extra good technically to compensate. I have good conditions with my new training partner Ivona (Dadic) and we help each other a lot. But perhaps what makes the biggest difference is that I can compete without any pain.

The new record points will give the 25-year-old plenty of ranking points to reach the indoor WC. Which is the big goal of this season.
– Of course I want to be at the WC, that’s why I train and compete, but I honestly don’t know how the system works, which ones come from outdoor results and from inside. I have to take it with Kajsa (Bergqvist, national team captain) or I’ll probably just sit back. I have done what I could and must be satisfied, says Salming to SVT.
– I would like to do one more indoor all-around and it would fit well with the WC because I feel I have more to give.

Only twelve pentathletes are allowed to participate in the Indoor WC in Glasgow during the beginning of March. Salming’s new personal best is the year’s fourth best in the world so far and she must remain in the top five until February 11 to be guaranteed a WC place.
– It’s really cruel of her. She was good and stable in all branches. A really good performance, says the coach Vladimir Petrovic to Dagens Nyheter after the weekend’s record series.
– After everything that has happened, she has landed and feels that all-around is what she wants to compete in. Then we have another girl in our team who is a very good all-around, Ivona Dadic (from Austria), and they have a very good chemistry . Everything is moving forward and now she is eager to move forward even more.
