The attack happened after midnight, according to the UK-based Syrian Observatory for Human Rights (SOHR). In addition to the five soldiers who were killed, another 20 people are said to have been injured.
Takes on attack
The Islamic Resistance in Iraq group, consisting of a loose alliance of Iran-linked Shia militias, has claimed responsibility for a drone attack on the “US occupation base” in the oil field on Sunday. However, it is unclear whether it is the same attack.
The US carried out massive attacks against Iraq and Syria during Friday where 85 targets were attacked. The attacks were in response to a drone attack on a US military base in Jordan in which three US soldiers were killed.
Tonight’s attack is the first attack carried out by pro-Iranian groups targeting US bases since the US strike, said SOHR chief Rami Abdel Rahman.
