Those with cameras can provide a small amount of information – like contact information and the location of a camera – or more details – such as the direction the camera faces, footage retention information and screenshots of the camera view.
Registrants will only be able to view their own information and can delete their account or change details at any time.
Police investigating crimes will be able to use CAMSafe to see a map of the area and where there are registered cameras. They will not be able to access security cameras or cloud-based accounts.
Investigators would then contact a property owner to request a look at surveillance footage.
People who have CCTV systems, doorbell cams and security cameras can register them at https://camsafe.ca
The project came onboard in Ontario after reported success in Red Deer, Alberta and Philadelphia.
Now the Ontario Provincial Police have rolled out CAMSafe to all detachments, joining existing programs in Peterborough, Hanover, Saugeen Shores and Kawartha Lakes.
