Former US President Donald Trump loses a legal dispute against a British ex-spy he sued for spreading “false and shocking” information. A British judge dismisses the case and rules that there will be no trial.

The lawsuit concerns a controversial report that made big headlines in the United States in 2016, shortly before Trump was installed as president. It contained startling information about contacts between Trump and the sphere of power in Russia, which was allegedly used to blackmail the future president. The report had been drawn up by former British intelligence agent Christopher Steele and was partly funded by the Democratic Party.

Trump, who is expected to be the Republican nominee in this year’s presidential election, had sued Steele and his company Orbis Business Intelligence for breaching UK data protection laws and for the “serious harm and pain” he caused.
