Swedish public broadcasting company SVT says that the country’s police and the Criminal Sanctions Institute ran into big problems due to the large number of arrests made in the country.
Due to the number of arrests, Swedish remand prisons are overcrowded, which is why hundreds of remand prisoners have been placed in police prisons intended for short-term detention by the police.
According to the statistics published today, there are currently 217 remand prisoners housed in the police prisons of the Swedish Police and the Criminal Sanctions Institute. As recently as last July, a total of eight remand prisoners were placed in Swedish police prisons.
– There are currently 500 remand prisoners in Stockholm County alone, a police spokesman Carina Skagerlind says to SVT.

Skagerlind blames the situation on the Criminal Sanctions Institute.
– The Criminal Sanctions Institution has a shortage of free cells, and the police have done their best to help them.
Seko, the Swedish trade union for criminal sanctions, admits to SVT that the current situation is unsustainable.
