With fluffy fur, cuddly company and a strong personality, the cat is a popular pet to say the least. Statistics from The Swedish Agency for Agriculture shows that during the summer of 2023 there were over 1.4 million cats in Sweden. The vast majority of cats are registered in Stockholm, and the most common is that you have a Bondkatt. Although the Swedes seem to appreciate the Bond cat the most, there are plenty of breeds with completely different personalities. A study from 2021 at the University of Helsinki shows that there are seven personality categories to place the cat breeds into.

The personality types have been established after a study of 4,300 cats belonging to 26 different breed groups. The goal was to fill an existing knowledge gap about cats’ behaviors.
– Compared to dogs, there is less information about cats’ behavior and personality, and there is a demand to identify problems and risk factors in cats. We need more understanding and tools to remove problematic behaviors and improve the cat’s well-being. The most common behavioral challenges associated with cats are aggression, the PhD student explains Salla Mikkola from the University of Helsinki and the Public Health Research Centre.
The personality types that could be identified were:
The most aggressive cat breed
The cat breed that most often has problems with aggression towards people is the Turkish habit.
– Turkish van scored significantly higher in aggression towards people and lower in sociability towards cats, says the professor Hannes Lohi from the University of Helsinki and the Public Health Research Centre.
For an aspiring pet owner looking for a social cat, a Turkish Van may therefore be the wrong match.
Among many other discoveries, one could also identify the Abyssinian as the bravest cat, and the Russian blue as the most fearful. Bengal cats are active, while Persians and Exotics are passive. Those who spend the most time cleaning their bodies are the Siamese and the Balinese.
