Three US soldiers have been killed and at least 34 injured in a drone attack on a US outpost in northeastern Jordan near the border with Syria. The matter is confirmed by the president Joe Biden in its announcement.
It is still unclear why the US outpost’s air defenses failed to repel the strike.
According to Biden and the US authorities, armed groups supported by Iran operating in Syria and Iraq are behind the attack.
– Although we are still gathering information about this attack, we know it was carried out by Iranian-backed militant groups operating in Syria and Iraq, Biden said in his statement.
Many of the attacks against Americans have been reported by the Islamic Resistance of Iraq. The group is a loose coalition of forces opposed to US support for Israel.
Biden also vowed that the United States would respond to the strike.
– We will bring all the culprits to account at the time and in the way we choose.
According to Jordan, the attack took place on Syrian soil
Jordan, on the other hand, has denied that the attack on US soldiers took place on its soil.
According to the spokesperson of the country’s government, the attack would have taken place in Syria at the American al-Tanf military base.
So far, Jordan has not provided any evidence for its claim, and the information has not been confirmed by independent sources.
The volatile situation in the Middle East is escalating
It is the first time that US soldiers have been killed in the Middle East during the war between Israel and the terrorist group Hamas.
The death of American soldiers marks an even stronger escalation of the already volatile situation in the Middle East, US media CNN write.
The United States has previously emphasized that it seeks to ease tensions in the Middle East and avoid the spread of the Gaza war.
