There is a tough situation for many regions this year, where the total deficit is expected to be SEK 24 billion – something that is starting to show.
In Gothenburg, there have been fewer ambulances, in Värmland the region is reducing 750 services and in Skellefteå elderly people who have been treated are forced to remain in hospital because it is not possible to offer home care or a place in accommodation.
The government is now opening up to push money to the country’s regions.
– There is an opportunity to do more in the future, when and if necessary. But it will be tough in 2024, says Finance Minister Elisabeth Svantesson (M).
Is the government doing enough?
– Of the budget that we have laid out for this year, 40 percent of the budget space we had went to municipalities and regions because it is tough, answers the finance minister.
– As I said, we follow the issue very closely, day by day, and do not rule out that we need to do more.
