The number of 5G smartphones has increased over the past few years. It was noticed that companies such as Samsung first entered the 5G smartphone industry, while Apple began to produce 5G iPhones with the iPhone 12 models. However, the world continued to use 4G phones in a dominant way. A recent report showed that this situation has changed in 2022, before 2023 or 2024, when 5G is predicted to be used much more intensively.

According to Counterpoint Research’s report, this year, sales of 5G smartphones have surpassed the sales of 4G models. In January 2022, 5G phones accounted for about 51 percent of all devices sold.
It was stated by the organization behind the report that MediaTek and Qualcomm’s newer and affordable chips that support faster bandwidth helped the 5G Android smartphone market to grow, while it was noted that this is especially true in segments between 250 and 400 dollars. It is stated that affordable chips enable Android phones between $150 and $250 to also support 5G connectivity.

On the other hand, it was stated that regions such as Asia-Pacific, the Middle East and Latin America are currently dominated by 4G phones, and there will likely be a change in the near future due to manufacturers who want to expand their 5G models towards these regions.
For now, the highest adoption rate of 5G is in China, reaching 84 percent in January 2021.
