Cheap electricity throughout the country – could become a new wind power record

Wind power production is nosing at previous highs.
And the strong winds have a significant effect on electricity prices throughout the country.
– Even during the normally most expensive hours, prices do not rise, says Johan Sigvardsson, electricity price expert at Bixia.

After snowstorms, freezing cold and frosty nights, things have turned around. In large parts of the country, it is plus degrees and strong winds cause the wind turbines to run at high speed. On average, the average price for Monday’s electricity prices will be around 30 öre per kWh.

– It is very windy, says Johan Sigvardsson, electricity price expert at Bixia.

Lowest this year

According to Johan Sigvardsson, it could be a new daily production record. Wind power production is currently around 12,000 megawatts – which is in line with historical highs. It can be compared with Epiphany, when production was 2,000 megawatts.

The prices are the lowest so far this year and according to Johan Sigvardsson they are not expected to rise even between 5-9pm, when electricity is usually the most expensive.

– Now that it has been very cold, consumption is high. As it decreases now that it is getting milder, it also dampens prices.

“Consumption that dominates”

He points out that it is easy to focus on nuclear power and electricity production in general when it comes to electricity prices. In recent weeks, both a reactor in Forsmark and Oskarshamn have reduced their production.

– But it is consumption that dominates. And recently it has been incredibly high, says Johan Sigvardsson.

Whether the current low prices hold will therefore depend a lot on how the weather will be in the future, according to Sigvardsson.
