Florida Governor Ron DeSantis is giving up the bid to become the Republican presidential candidate, he announced in a video on X.
– I cannot ask our supporters to give their time and donate their resources if we do not have a clear path to victory. That’s why I’m canceling my campaign today, he says in the clip.
The announcement comes after weak primary results in Iowa, and ahead of expected low support in the New Hampshire primary on Tuesday.
Wanted to tighten the abortion law
In the roughly four-minute clip on social media, DeSantis says he supports Trump, despite their differences.
– Trump is superior to Biden, that’s clear, he says.
Ron DeSantis was one of Donald Trump’s stronger challengers in the Republican primary. In his role as governor, he took major political steps to the right with tough abortion laws, a low threshold for the death penalty and a law banning the teaching of sexual orientation and racism in American schools.
DeSanti’s defection leaves Nikki Haley as Trump’s only challenger. According to a CNN poll, she is expected to get 39 percent of support in New Hampshire.
