Having pets in rental properties is usually not a problem, but there are rules to adhere to.
News24 have talked to Johanna Lundmarkcommunicator at the Tenants’ Association, to find out exactly what applies.
– As a rule, landlords cannot prohibit tenants from having pets such as dogs, cats, birds, hamsters and the like. If the tenant lives in an allergy house, different things apply, she says.

Landlords may have their own rules of order
According to Johanna Lundmark, landlords can set up their own rules of order, which prohibit certain animals. An example of this is a housing company in Gothenburg that has banned the Amstaff dog breed.
– It is unclear whether one would risk becoming homeless if such a condition were tried in court, but we do not recommend tenants to violate the order conditions. It is best to start by talking to the landlord if there are rules about pets, says Johanna Lundmark.
Then you can be fired
Although you can have whatever animals and insects you want in your apartment, you must take care of them.
– There is no prohibition against having, for example, cockroaches, some have these as food for another animal, but as an animal owner you always have a responsibility for any damage that the animals cause. And if you contribute to spreading cockroaches or other pests in a property, you can be liable for compensation and dismissed, says Johanna Lundmark.

Are there any animals that are not allowed?
– To have snakes in the apartment, you first need to apply for a permit from the environmental administration in the municipality where you live, says Johanna Lundmark.
Should you have a snake without a permit and it is discovered, you will be fined heavily. How much depends on which municipality you live in.
