How many Star Wars films have been officially announced?
Four Star Wars films have currently been officially announced by Lucasfilm. Three were unveiled at Star Wars Celebration last year. A fourth has been announced since the beginning of the year.
A Star Wars film by Sharmeen Obaid-Chinoy: Set after the sequel trilogy, the story of the reconstruction of the Jedi Order is told. Daisy Ridley returns as Rey Skywalker. The project is described as “New Jedi Order”. However, that is not the official title yet.
A Star Wars film by James Mangold: After Indy 5, James Mangold tells the story of the origin of the Jedi and the Force. The film is set 25,000 years before Star Wars and is usually referred to as “Dawn of the Jedi” in reporting. But this title is not official either.
A Star Wars film by Dave Filoni: The third film announced at Star Wars Celebration comes from Clone Wars mastermind Dave Filoni. It is intended to bring all series from the Mandoverse together on the big screen. However, no further information about the project is known.
A Star Wars film by Jon Favreau: Still fresh on this list is The Mandalorian & Grogu. We’ve known since the beginning of the year that The Mandalorian creator Jon Favreau is bringing the story of the titular characters to the cinema. Many Star Wars fans assumed that this year would be the Filming for the 4th season of The Mandalorian begin. The announcement of The Mandalorian & Grogu therefore causes uncertainty: Does the film replace the new episodes? Will both come? And how does the Filoni film fit into this?

Before the strike The Mandalorian season 4 was firmly planned by the actors and screenwriters in Hollywood. Favreau had also said several times that the scripts had already been written.
After the strike Lucasfilm has shifted its priorities and put many planned projects to the test. The most important thing for the studio under the leadership of Kathleen Kennedy is to bring a new Star Wars film to the cinema.
The Mandalorian & Grogu definitely coming. The wording in the press release suggests that it will be the first new Star Wars film. Favreau directed and co-wrote the screenplay with Filoni.
Filoni’s Mandoverse film is still being planned, but is still a long way off. For now, Filoni is busy working on Ahsoka Season 2, which will most likely lead up to the big movie.
The Mandalorian Season 4 is not off the table, but not safe either. If the film is a huge success, it could lead to the next phase of the Mandoverse on Disney+, as the Hollywood Reporter writes.What’s the status of the Rey movie with Daisy Ridley?
This week, a rumor caused a stir that the Rey film had been postponed indefinitely due to creative differences with screenwriter Steven Knight. However, film journalist Germain Lussier from io9 has learned from his sources at Lucasfilm that this is not the case. The project is located still in progress.

The usually reliable scooper Jeff Sneider supports Lussier’s report and adds two exciting details in his newsletter The InSneider. Apparently Ridley receives a fee for her Star Wars return $12.5 million and could appear as Rey Skywalker in a Star Wars film from Deadpool 3 director Shawn Levy alongside the New Jedi Order film. However, the project is not yet concrete.
When are the new Star Wars films coming to cinemas?
Lucasfilm has so far announced three launch dates for the coming years, but without linking them to a specific title.
May 20, 2026December 18, 2026December 17, 2027Sneider speculates that The Mandalorian & Grogu will arrive in May 2026, the Rey film will take over the December 2026 slot, and the Dawn of the Jedi film will then arrive in 2027. For Filoni’s Mandoverse film, he thinks a release in 2028 is likely.

Donald Glover’s Lando film was originally announced as a series for Disney+ at Disney Investor Day 2020. As of 2023, we’ve known that Donald and Stephen Glover are turning the project into a film.Star Wars films that are becoming increasingly unlikely:
Taika Waititi’s Star Wars film was officially announced in May 2020 with Krysty Wilson-Cairns as co-author. Since then, the film has not made any significant progress. There isn’t even a complete script yet.
Rian Johnson’s Star Wars trilogy was announced before the theatrical release of The Last Jedi in 2017, but has not yet become concrete. Johnson and Lucasfilm regularly express their interest, but there is no further movement.Star Wars films that will most likely never come:
Kevin Feige’s Star Wars film has been circulating through the rumor mill since 2019. Michael Waldron has been attached to the project as a screenwriter and Joe and Anthony Russo as directors. The film never became concrete.
Guillermo del Toro’s Star Wars film would have told the story of the most powerful gangster in the Star Wars universe, Jabba the Hutt. Del Toro compares the story set in Tatooine to mafia epics like The Godfather.
DB Weiss and David Benioff’s Star Wars trilogy After Game of Thrones, it was supposed to tell the story of the first Jedi. They left the project after creative differences. Now the Dawn of the Jedi film awaits us.
JD Dillard and Matt Owens Star Wars film first appeared in the media in early 2020 and was set to take place on the Sith planet Exegol. Dillard cited the video game Star Wars: TIE Fighter as his inspiration.
Patty Jenkins’ Star Wars film caused quite a stir at Disney Investor Day 2020. Rogue Squadron was announced with an X-wing teaser and a theatrical release in December 2023. The film is currently on hold.
A Droid Story is another failure from Disney Investor Day 2023.
