A Swedish man in his 60s was arrested in Iran at the end of last year. The man, one of at least four Swedes in Iranian prison, was arrested “for no clear reason”, according to the Foreign Ministry.
The Foreign Ministry states in an email to TT that it handles a “handful of complicated consular cases with Swedes deprived of their liberty in Iran”, but does not want to say exactly how many.
EU official Johan Floderus and researcher Ahmadreza Djalali have been imprisoned on charges of espionage. Djalali was sentenced to death in 2017. The trial against Floderus is ongoing.
At the end of December, a man in his 60s was arrested for unknown reasons.
At the beginning of January, another Swedish citizen, a man in his 20s, was arrested. This after Swedish prosecutors issued an arrest warrant against the man, who is suspected of aiding and abetting murder and aggravated weapons offences.
The Foreign Ministry summoned Iran’s chargé d’affaires on Wednesday.
“At the meeting, Sweden’s demand for the immediate release of the Swedish citizens who are arbitrarily detained in Iran was reinforced,” said Foreign Minister Tobias Billström (M) in a written statement to TT after the meeting.
