The modern western story with Kevin Costner as the head of a powerful ranching family is just the tip of the series iceberg. Although Lawmen: Bass Reeves was originally announced as another prequel series to the Yellowstone universe, that connection was later dropped, according to TVLine. Chad Feehan’s western series stands on its own.

1883 draws as a prequel series dangerous path of the Dutton ancestors to the west after: James Dutton (Tim McGraw) joins a settler trek with his family, including daughter Elsa (Isabel May), to find a new home. With indigenous peoples, river crossings and hurricanes, they have to face countless obstacles.

At the beginning of the 20th century, the Yellowstone Ranch was in the hands of Jacob Dutton (Harrison Ford) and his wife Cara (Helen Mirren), who and their relatives have to fight poachers and greedy landowners. In parallel plots, her nephew Spencer Dutton (Brandon Sklenar) also travels Africa homeward and the indigenous Teonna (Aminah Nieves) escapes from a re-education home.
