Now it will be decided whether climate minister Romina Pourmokhtari can remain in office

The Center and the Green Party have brought a motion of no confidence against the minister, among other things, because she has presented a climate action plan that does not reduce Swedish emissions of carbon dioxide. On the contrary, they are expected to increase in the short term.

The Left Party also supports the motion of no confidence.

However, it looks difficult for the opposition to bring down Pourmokhtari, especially since the fourth and largest opposition party, the Social Democrats, said they will withhold their votes.

SVT’s domestic policy commentator Elisabeth Marmorstein believes that the motion of no confidence is primarily a way for a pressured C to profile itself:

– The party has lost confidence in the environmental and climate issue and has ended up in obscurity. Pushing for a mistrust allows them to be seen.

Far from half

At least half of the members of the Riksdag must vote yes for a motion of no confidence to be directed against a cabinet, that is, at least 175 members. C + V + MP gather together only 66 members.

MP spokesperson Daniel Helldén has said he hopes some of Pourmokhtari’s party friends within the Liberals would switch sides and instead support the opposition’s motion of no confidence. But after the Social Democrats’ announcement on Tuesday that they were giving up their 107 votes, this would have no significance.

The government parties and the support party the Sweden Democrats together have 175 seats in the Riksdag and thus a majority. In order for Pourmokhtari to be convicted, no fewer than 109 members must defy the party whip and vote against it.
