Charlotte Baris: To start this episode, I have prepared a small file for you with newspaper clippings from the regional daily press (from the Voice of the North to be more precise). I’m going to read you a few extracts, and you’ll quickly see where I’m going with this. We start with this one, dated March 17, 2021 : “In Lille, Habitat is leaving rue Esquermoise… Established for almost twenty years in the chic artery of the city center, Habitat announces its closure on April 24…”

We move forward in time, this time with another newspaper clipping dated February 24, 2023, almost a year ago: “The Habitat furniture brand is making a comeback in Lille… the store is moving to the place of the former H & M, rue de Béthune. Opening planned may’s beginning.” And I end with the most recent extract (it was about a month ago): “The Habitat furniture brand was placed in receivership this week, due to “deep financial difficulties”. The chain of furniture stores has 25 stores in France, including a rue de Béthune in Lille which has just opened.”

Since the publication of the last article that I read to you, the commercial court has even placed the company in compulsory liquidation, that is to say, it has ended its activity and its assets will be sold for pay his creditors. The case of the furniture brand is far from isolated. In recent months, the number of bankruptcies in France has exploded… and they affect all sectors. So how did our businesses become so fragile, and should we be worried about 2024? These are the questions we are asking at La Loupe today…
