The Queen announced her abdication during a meeting with the Danish Cabinet at Christiansborg Palace, which also hosts the Prime Minister’s Office in Copenhagen.
BREAKED THE 900-YEAR-OLD METHOD
The 83-year-old Queen, who abdicated to make way for her son Prince Frederik, became the first Danish monarch to voluntarily abdicate the throne in almost 900 years.
In her New Year’s speech on December 31, 2023, Queen Margrethe announced that she would abdicate the throne and leave her place to her 55-year-old son, Crown Prince Frederik, and her daughter-in-law, Queen Mary.
The Queen of Denmark was crowned in 1972.
