Stina Nilsson can’t get it right.
It is now causing major reactions in Norway.
– Sweden has placed a lot of trust and resources in her, says expert Ola Lunde.
Stina Nilsson has been poked from the World Cup for large parts of the past year, and this week it made big headlines when Wolfgang Pichler sawed Nilsson to the ankles in an interview with SVT. The demonstration coach said that Sweden simply does not need Nilsson, and that she is not good enough.
Toks were sawn by Pichler
However, Nilsson has, in recent weeks, shown good form in the IBU Cup, the sub-cup to the World Cup. Despite that, Pichler believed that Nilsson does not deserve a place in the upcoming WC, as the level is simply too high in biathlon right now.
And even in Norway, there are now many who are reacting to Pichler’s performance, and Nilsson’s continued absence from the World Cup. When Nilsson made the switch to biathlon, she came from a few winters where she had been one of the world’s best cross-country skiers. Nilsson, on her best days, could threaten Therese Johaug herself, and many believed that she would have an easy time in her new sport. But that has not been the case.
Norwegian criticism
And that makes Norwegian biathlon expert Ola Lunde react strongly.
– What is the biggest disappointment is that she did not get to the speed that was expected. But that’s the whole total, it hasn’t been good enough either in the shooting or in the track. Sweden has young skaters who have done well in the IBU Cup, which they would like to give the chance. At the same time, they have had great faith and invested a lot of resources in Nilsson, says Lunde to Nettavisen.
However, Ola Lunde believes that Nilsson may have found something now, and that she has shown good form in recent times.
– She has shown good results recently. She is in better shape than in December, but she is still not a safe bet, says Lunde.
