Best Barbarian Build – This is how you play Karlach correctly

Karlach is one of the most popular companions in Baldur’s Gate 3. As a barbarian, she can really heat up her opponents and is a power woman in the truest sense of the word. In this guide you will find out how you can get the best out of her, or even a barbarian you have created yourself.

Who is Karlach? Karlach belongs to the Tiefling race and can be chosen as an Origin character at the start of the game, or later join the group as a companion.

After she was sold to the archdevil Zariel, she managed to escape from hell. However, the fire of Avernus still burns within her, as an infernal machine has been used as her heart.

In this guide you will find out how you can find Karlach and win it over.

What can the barbarian do? The barbarian class is best suited if you like to hit it hard without taking losses into account and prefer a somewhat simpler, straightforward build. As a classic melee class, you can dish out a lot of damage, but you can also take it.

Compared to other melee classes, the barbarian is characterized by its particular ferocity. He goes into a fighting frenzy and lets his anger take over.

You can find out how the Barbarian compares to other classes in our class tier list here on MeinMMO.

Here you can see which class is best for beginners:

Barbarian Build – Best subclass

The Barbarian class offers three subclasses: Berserker, Wildheart and Wild Magic. At level 3 you can choose one of them.

The Berserker class is particularly worthwhile. This increases combat frenzy and lets you throw objects or carry out an additional attack as a bonus action. The subclass is extremely strong and relies on a high damage output.

Bonus: If you’re playing as Karlach, the Berserker’s offensive subclass also matches her ability to use Soul Coins. This gives her the “Infernal Wrath” buff, which deals an additional 1d4 fire damage to all attacks while she is in a rage or her health falls below 25%.

At level 3 you choose the Berserker subclass.

Barbarian Build – Attributes

Strength, constitution and skill are particularly important for a barbarian. The optimal distribution to start with is:

  • Strength: 16
  • Dexterity: 14
  • Constitution: 16
  • Intelligence: 8
  • Wisdom: 12
  • Charisma: 8
  • The high Strength value increases damage and the Constitution value increases health to make Karlach an unstoppable melee fighter.

    Barbarian Build – Talents

If you level up in Baldur’s Gate 3, you will be given the opportunity to choose special talents. These influence, for example, the character’s development, add spells or abilities. You can choose talents at levels 4, 8 and 12.

    Level 4

  • Improve Skills: 2 points in Strength
  • Level 8

  • Heavy Weapons Mastery
  • With this talent you can perform even more attacks. For each critical or fatal hit with a melee weapon, you gain another melee attack as a bonus action.

Additionally, a -5 penalty can optionally be added to attack rolls to increase damage by 10 if the attack is successful.

    Level 12

  • Improve Skills: 2 points in Strength
  • If you have already reached strength 20 in another way, for example through the “Potion of Everlasting Vitality”, you can of course distribute these points differently. A good alternative is also the talent “Mage Slayer” to get a better chance against magic-casters with a long range.
  • All additional attacks and abilities are automatically added as the levels progress. There are no more decisions to make here, which makes the Berserker build very easy.

For example, at level 5 you get another bonus attack. From here Karlach really takes off. If you are in a rage, you already have three attacks per turn. With a “Potion of Speed” there can be even more.

The first talent selection occurs at level 4.

Barbarian Build – Which items are worth it?

A build can only work really well with the right items. The following items go well with a barbarian:

    armor

For protection you use medium armor. Also helpful are:

  • Talisman of the Absolutes
  • Effect: if you have less than 25% health, each attack returns 1d8 hit points
  • Location: Priestess Gut in the Goblin Camp (Act 1)
  • Drescher’s ring
  • Effect: +3 movement rate
  • Location: Goblin Camp (Act 1)
  • Gloves of Dexterity
  • Effect: increase Dexterity to 18
  • Location: Trader in Creche Y’llek (Act 2)
  • Amulet of Bhaal
  • Effect: causes enemies hit with full health to bleed
  • Location: Murder Tribunal (Act 3)
  • You can get the Everglow Blade right at the beginning.

    weapons

Actually, all melee weapons that cause as much damage as possible are suitable as weapons. These mainly include large two-handed weapons. Good options for the beginning and end of the game include:

  • Sword of Chaos
  • Effect: returns 1d6 hit points to the wearer if the attack is successful
  • Location: Murder Tribunal (Act 3)
  • Balduran’s Giant Slayer
  • Effect: Advantage on attack rolls against at least large creatures, as well as a class action that temporarily increases damage and hit points
  • Location: Wyrm’s Prison (Act 3)
  • Make sure you always have a few throwing weapons with you. If you need to take out opponents from a distance, these can prove to be extremely useful.

In this guide we have highlighted a pure barbarian build. If you want, you can of course also use this in combination with other classes. The last stages in particular are not that important for barbarians. Here you could instead, for example, rely on multiclassing with a paladin or fighter.

A “strong” combination, for example, also offers a Druid of the Moon Circle, enriched with a few levels of the Barbarian. You can find this and other best multiclass builds here on MeinMMO: The best multiclass builds and what makes them so good
