(Finance) – During the third quarter of 2023guests spent 309.4 million nights in short-term rental accommodation in the EU, booked via Airbnb, Booking, Expedia Group or TripAdvisor. This corresponds to an increase of 13.4% compared to the same period in 2022.
With this value, platform tourism continued to surpass pre-pandemic levels and to establish new monthly record values: in July, 115.7 million overnight stays were spent in accommodation facilities booked via online platforms, with an increase of 10.7% compared to July 2022. In August, this number rose to 124, 7 million nights (+11.7% compared to August 2022) and in September it was 69.1 million (+21.6% compared to September 2022).
In the first nine months of 2023, guests spent more than 546.2 million nights in short-term rental accommodation in the EU booked via online platforms. This is a significant growth compared to the same period in 2022 (488.6 million nights; +11.8%); with overnight stays well above pre-pandemic levels (423.7 million overnight stays in the first nine months of 2019; +28.9%).
This information comes from monthly housing data for short-term stays offered via online platforms for the third quarter of 2023 nationwide, published today by Eurostat. In addition, regional data for the second quarter of 2023 will also be released. This data is collected by four private collaborative economy platforms as part of an agreement with the European Commission in March 2020. The regional data is published a quarter later than the data national, in accordance with the rules established in the agreement.
The most popular regions for short-term rental accommodation booked via online platforms in the second quarter of 2023 were Andalusia in Spain (7.1 million nights), Jadranska Hrvatska in Croatia (6.5 million) and the region French Ile de France (5.8 million). In the top 20 regions, 7 are in Spain, 5 each in France and Italy, 2 regions are in Portugal and 1 in Croatia.
