In France, while Emmanuel Macron and Gabriel Attal are considering the composition of the new government, the President of the National Assembly is overseas. After three days on Reunion Island, Yaël Braun-Pivet arrives today in Mayotte, a small island in the Indian Ocean, the poorest French department. The President of the Assembly is getting wet and wants to show that she is in contact with all French people.

“ This is unprecedented in the history of the Assembly », insists those around him. After setting foot on the soil of Guyana at the end of 2022, Yaël Braun-Pivet took advantage of the parliamentary holidays to become the first President of the National Assembly to travel to Reunion and Mayotte.
But far from the perch of the Assembly, the exercise is risky for those who want to make their mark. In Mayotte, Yaël Braun-Pivet lands in a territory shaken by several crises.
Faced with the worst drought in 25 years, the Mahorais are deprived of drinking water two days out of three and the State has had to urgently set up bottle distributions for residents. Brawls between gangs of young people have left three people dead in recent weeks, breaking the relative calm which followed Operation Wuambushu.
And then Yaël Braun Pivet will be able to measure the impact of the immigration law, contested in his own camp. Because in Mayotte, one in two inhabitants is not French and the text voted on before the holidays further tightens the conditions for granting French nationality to children born to foreign parents. A three-day visit which will therefore be nothing like a tourist stroll.
