Spielberg’s tragicomedy is based on the real case of the Iranian refugee Mehran Karimi Nasseri, who lived in Paris’ Charles de Gaulle airport for 18 years, as the New York Times reports. According to a second New York Times report, Spielberg purchased the rights to Nasseri’s life story to use in the film.
