Israel’s army says a “leading figure” within Hamas has been killed in Syria. The named Hassan Akasha is said to have been responsible for rocket fire from Syria against Israeli territory.
The information has not been confirmed by independent sources. The Israeli army says in a statement that “Akasha has controlled terrorist cells within Hamas that have fired rockets from Syria since the war began.”
Akasha was killed in the area of Beit Jinn, which is close to the Israeli-annexed Golan Heights.
Israel’s military and intelligence services very rarely comment on events where attacks are carried out against individuals, but have previously repeated on several occasions that they do not intend to allow arch-rivals Iran or Syria under Bashar al-Assad’s regime to expand their military presence on the borders with Israel.
