Frida Karlsson was not allowed to defend the Tour de Ski victory.
It wasn’t even a podium.
– It’s sad, says Karlsson to SVT.
Tour de Ski 2024 is over. Just as many thought, it became the American Jessie Diggins who stood victorious after the final climb. Second was the Norwegian Heidi Weng and the Finnish Kerttu Niskanen came third.
Last year’s horror
Among the Swedes it was above all Ebba Andersson and Frida Karlsson who were favorites before the tour. But Ebba dropped out after three stages as she was in bad shape after having corona during Christmas. Frida Karlsson came to Toblach, Italy as the reigning champion after winning last year’s Tour de Ski.

Then Karlsson caused a real emotional rollercoaster for the Swedish viewers. First she took home the win, which made us cheer. But then she collapsed in the finish line after the rock-hard climb on Alpe Cermis, which caused great concern. After some care and warmth, Frida was back on her feet and everyone could breathe.
Karlsson’s disappointment
This year, Karlsson did not have to defend his victory in the tour. There was no podium either, even though she was third before the final stage. The 24-year-old finished fourth overall, after finishing 10th on the climb.
– I have a challenge with the slope, it has left its mark. It was a bit of the same scenario, just not as extreme. The body became mute. You go down and dig, you do, says Frida to SVT.

A top four placement is not so fun, but Frida Karlsson is not satisfied.
– I am disappointed, I had wanted to defend… I had the podium in my hands before this day. So it’s a bit sad. I don’t really feel like I’m there. I have some flashes of light but it’s not top form, says the 24-year-old.

Clear message
Even on Instagram, Karlsson is clear about his feelings.
“Tour de shit. But we’ll be back!!!”, she writes under a post that can be seen below.
Second best Swedish was Jonna Sundling in fifth place, and Lynn Svahn finished sixth overall.
