87-year-old Peltonen, who lives in Valkeakoski, collapsed in the yard of a convenience store on January 2. Peltonen’s wife told Urheilu about what happened Kyllikki Peltonenwho was by her husband’s side when the illness struck.
– We got help right away. A resuscitation procedure had to be done, but it paid off. Now the follow-up matters are taken care of in Tampere. My health has recovered, let’s say moderately. Now let’s go one day at a time, Kyllikki Peltonen comments on her spouse’s situation over the phone.
– Juhani is fully conscious. He has called me today on his own initiative.
Born in Säaksmäki in 1936, Voitto Matti Juhani Peltonen has been a familiar sight in the stands in recent years at the games of Haka, the representative team of his hometown Valkeakoski. Playing as a winger, Peltonen won the Finnish championship in 1960 and 1962 and five Finnish Cups (1955, 1959, 1960, 1963 and 1969) in Haka’s colors.
Palloliitto chose him as Footballer of the Year in 1960, 1962 and 1964, in the latter of which he was the first Finnish player to move to the German Bundesliga in the ranks of Hamburger Sport-Verein.
During his three-season tenure at HSV, Peltonen met, among other things, the German football icon who passed away on Monday by Franz Beckenbauer. The match played at the 70,000-capacity stadium in Hamburg on October 20, 1965 ended with a 4–0 victory for Bayern Munich represented by Beckenbauer.
For the fact that Peltonen did not follow Keisari Beckenbauer from time to eternity, Kyllikki Peltonen expresses profuse thanks to Finnish healthcare.
– Full score. Help came as soon as we called. Many thanks for the high-level treatment, Kyllikki Peltonen says and swears that her husband will be seen watching Haka’s matches next season as well.
– It’s quite clear that he likes to go to every game he can get to. Of course we’ll take him if the situation calls for it. He is such a sports and football guy.
