OpenAI, the company behind the viral AI chatbot ChatGPT, has confirmed in an email that their marketplace for so-called GPTs is launching next week, reports TechCrunch.

Promised in November

Last November, OpenAI held its first “DevDay”, a conference where they showcased several new updates to ChatGPT. Among other things, the possibility for users to create their own GPTs.

GPTs are more specialized variants of ChatGPT, with more specific instructions and goals. The feature is only available to ChatGPT Plus members at this time.

Delayed due to the CEO drama

With this update, a marketplace, similar to the App Store on the iPhone, called GPT-Store was also promised. The GPT-store would allow users to earn money based on how many people use their GPT.

However, the launch of the feature was delayed in December. Likely the delay was due to the CEO drama at OpenAI, there Sam Altman was fired by the board and later reinstated.

Missing a platform

Since launching in November, users have been able to share their GPTs via links, but there has been a lack of a centralized platform for discovering and sharing other people’s GPTs.

It is currently unclear if there is any method for users to get paid for their GPTs. OpenAI has previously said it plans a way to pay creators based on how much their GPTs are used. An OpenAI spokesperson confirms to TechCrunch that more information will be coming next week.
