The Tetris world record broken and the most anticipated games

The new year is off to a strong start with video game news, particularly on the world record on Tetrisbut also the games most anticipated by players in 2024.

Before starting my list, I wanted to share some cool news with you at the start of the year. You probably know the musical theme of this game ? We talked about it on RFI, the world record on Tetris was beaten on December 21 by a 13-year-old American teenager, his name is “Blue Scuti” and he is the first human in 35 years to have achieved this feat of playing Tetris in its original version on the NES console until it “crashed”, therefore having reached the end after 157 levels of play.

For some, this is an achievement and for others it is not commendable. A Sky News presenter announcing this information added that as a mother, she advises Willis Gibson aka Blue Scuti to “ get away from your screen to get some fresh air outside “. A remark which was taken very badly by players, particularly on social networks since it reminds us of the extent to which the gaming community continues to be stigmatized.

She is called a “hater”, a person who knows nothing, and I agree with that, this additional remark with a mocking air was really not necessary on the part of the presenter. I continue to insist that playing video games is a hobby like any other. Furthermore, there is still no finalized study showing that they are addictive or make children violent. Remember that it is up to parents to monitor how often their children play. To end on this subject, I say congratulations to Blue Scuti who made history by doing what many adults have failed to achieve!

The most anticipated games in 2024

There are obviously some essentials expected by everyone, like Star Wars Outlaw, Final Fantasy VII Rebirth, Death Stranding 2, Silent Hill 2, Mass Effect 5 which are rather triple-A.

For my part, I am impatiently waiting Prince of Persia: The Lost Crown. It’s the big return of one of Ubisoft’s cult licenses. This game has a special meaning for me, because Prince of Persia is the first adventure game I played and which really had an impact on me, to the point of making video games a passion. There hasn’t been a new game since 2010 after The forgotten sands so I was impatiently waiting for this new edition! I actually had the chance to preview it at Paris Games Week and I loved this return to basics. It releases on January 15 on all platforms.

I am also waiting Tekken 8, the fighting “game” that marked my adolescence. The game with which I realized that I would not systematically win by insisting on the controller. It comes out on January 26 and I can’t wait to find Jin Kazama’s story.

In third place, I can’t wait to discover Hades II, the date of which has not been announced, but which will surely arrive in 2024. Hades is an action role-playing game drawn from Greek mythology where we try to escape from the house to leave “daddy”, in somehow. What’s cool outside of the gameplay is that in the first game, all the gods and goddesses that the main character Zagreus deals with come from all walks of life. So the myth of the straight white Greek god is over and we would like Supergiant Games, which created the game, to stick to it since Hades II will propose a heroine this time!

Fourth expected game even though it was announced only a month ago during the Game Awards, it is Tales of Kenzera: Zau which will be released on April 23, 2024. It’s always a great strategy to announce a game and release it quickly afterwards! Here, we are dealing with a 2D action-adventure game where we play a shaman who lost her father and who makes a deal with the god of death to bring him back from darkness. For once, we are in Afro-fantasy with characters and universes inspired by African cultures and the very life of the creator who also lost his father. The game is developed by Surgent Studios which was founded by Abubakar Salim, the man who voices Adéwalé in Assassin’s Creed. Isn’t that refreshing?

We end with Skull and Bones, a pirate and naval battle game that we’ve been waiting for since 2018. It has unfortunately been postponed many times, but I’m keeping my fingers crossed that this time will be the right one. The appointment in fresh water is set for February 2024!
