There is still time to submit nominations for the first Black Excellence Awards and gala.

The Black Excellence committee, in concert with Buxton’s Next Generation (BNG) and Buxton National Historic Site and Museum, said in a release the portal is open and actively gathering community wide nominations.

Nominations close Jan 10 and nominees will be announced shortly thereafter.
“We are delighted to shine a light on the excellences found in our community,” said co-chair and curator of the Buxton National Historic Site and Museum Michelle Robbins, in the release.
The awards will celebrate the black community and the greater community in the following categories:
- Female of the year
- Male of the year
- Youth of the year
- Entrepreneur of the year
- Agriculturalist of the year
- Citizen of the year

The celebration and awards will culminate with an event being held Feb. 10 at the Retro Suites, Derby Room that “will be the cornerstone to Black History Month,” said co-chair Shannon Prince.
“That night, we will also be recognizing our trailblazer award, our most prestigious award,” said co-chair Doug Robbins.
