The state’s highest court found Trump ineligible to run in the Republican primaries because Trump was considered to be involved in unconstitutional rebellion.
The US Supreme Court has decided to hear the appeal of the country’s former president Donald Trump’s of being declared ineligible for election in the state of Colorado.
According to the Supreme Court’s decision on Friday, oral statements related to the case will begin to be heard at the beginning of February.
The judges of the Supreme Court decided to take up the case unusually quickly. They also expressed that the decision will be given on an accelerated schedule. Trump filed his appeal in the case last Wednesday.
At the end of the year, the Colorado Supreme Court ruled that Trump cannot participate in the Republican primary in the state.
The reason is the 14th amendment to the constitution, according to which participants in the rebellion against the constitution cannot be elected to public office, if they have previously sworn in their oath of office to support the constitution.
The background is Trump’s involvement in the takeover of the US Congress building in January 2021.
Both Trump and the Colorado Republican Party appealed the decision to the state Supreme Court.
The state of Maine has also prevented Trump from participating in the primaries. Trump has also complained about Maine’s decision.
Trump’s candidacy has been challenged on the basis of the same constitutional amendment in other states as well.
The US Supreme Court currently has a conservative majority. Trump has appointed three of the court’s nine justices.
The Republican Party will choose its presidential candidate in the primaries in the first half of this year. The US presidential election will be held in November this year.
