Marijke van Beukering, who was an alderman in IJsselstein and was a member of the House of Representatives for D66, was appointed mayor after a long application procedure. She thus left the other candidates, fifteen in total, behind her. “On April 11, I received the redeeming phone call in the evening. I jumped for joy. On the one hand with relief and on the other with joy. I just wanted to become mayor of Nieuwegein, and I succeeded.”
