When Denmark’s Queen Margrethe signs her abdication on January 14, there will be a change of throne. Her eldest son enters the ceremony as Crown Prince and leaves as King Frederik X of Denmark.
The Danish royal house now describes on its website how the change of throne will take place. The ceremony is held in the form of a so-called state council at Christiansborg Palace in Copenhagen, but what time of day it will be has not yet been announced.
In addition to Queen Margrethe, Crown Prince Frederik, Crown Princess Mary and their eldest son Prince Christian, who will be Denmark’s next Crown Prince, are present.
After the meeting, Prime Minister Mette Frederiksen (S) will proclaim the change of throne at Christiansborg Castle. However, there will be no coronation – Danish kings are not crowned, they are proclaimed.
Denmark’s last change of throne took place in 1972, when King Fredrik IX died and the heir to the throne Margrethe became queen.
