The UN Security Council is scheduled to discuss the attacks by the Yemeni rebels in its meeting.
Yemen’s Houthi rebels have again fired on cargo ships in the Red Sea, the US military said on Wednesday. According to the United States Middle East Command (Centcom), the rebels fired two missiles into the southern Red Sea area late Tuesday.
There were several ships in the area between the coasts of Eritrea and Yemen, but the missiles did not hit them.
The UN Security Council is scheduled to hold a meeting on Wednesday where, according to French diplomats, the Houthi attacks in the Red Sea will be discussed.
The Danish shipping company Maersk said on Tuesday that its ships will not use the Red Sea and Gulf of Aden routes “in the near future” due to the attacks, but will continue their journey around Hyväntoivonniemi.
According to the rebels, the attacks support the Palestinians in Gaza. According to Centcom, the rebels have already carried out 24 attacks against cargo ships in the Red Sea since mid-November.
The Houthis control Yemen’s capital Sanaa and most of the country’s Red Sea coast.
The Red Sea is an important trade route, through which approximately 12 percent of the world’s trade normally passes. The United States has established a multinational naval alliance to protect ships on the route.
