Extreme cold in the north – the lowest temperature in over 120 years

Several weather warnings have been issued around the country and in the north have the extreme cold has struck.
Last night, 43.6 minus degrees were measured in Kvikkjokk-Årrenjarka in Lapland last night – it is the coldest temperature in the city since the beginning of the 20th century, according to TV4’s meteorologist Ulrika Elvgren.

– It’s cold, but we’ve had colder ones in Sweden, of course. For that weather station in Kvikkjokk-Årrenjarka, it is possibly also a station record. They started measuring there in September of 1887. So this is the coldest in the area in over 120 years.

According to her, the cold will remain at these levels during the week but will moderate until the weekend.

Before the cold sets in in northernmost Sweden, the temperature can drop to minus 35-40 degrees in some places.

Difficult weather

Even in the south, the weather becomes troublesome.

SMHI warns that southern Götaland will have a rather stormy Wednesday with strong easterly wind gusts, while it looks like there will be a lot of snow.

In eastern Scania, Blekinge and southern Kalmar county, there may be 20–30 centimeters of snow.

It can be difficult snow and slippery mainly in northern Östergötland, Sörmland and Uppland.
