Laws and regulations you must know – when you buy a dog
There are several obligations you as a buyer have, that is what the lawyer believes Teresa Holmquist who works with insurance and contract law, and runs the information site djuridik.se.
In an interview with News24 she tells you what you as a private person must keep in mind before buying a dog.
– When you buy a dog from a private person, the agreement that the buyer and the seller have agreed upon applies primarily. If there is no clear agreement, the sales law applies, she says and continues:
– If there is a fault with the animal, for example if it has characteristics that do not match the agreement or if the seller did not inform about serious faults, you can complain.
In the event that it would be relevant to make a complaint about the pet, you need to tell the seller that it is not in contractual condition. Then you can instead request that the seller correct the error, ask for a price reduction, request a new animal or simply ask to cancel the purchase.

The lawyer: Then the Consumer Purchase Act applies
As important as it is to be clear about what applies to you as a customer, it is important to understand the seller’s role in a deal. Holmquist explains that you need to be aware that a seller is seen as a trader if he sells dogs on more than one occasion, even if the person himself sees it as a hobby. In other words, other laws enter the picture, which can help you in the event of any problems.
– If that is the case, the Consumer Purchase Act applies instead of the Purchase Act, and the rules in the Consumer Purchase Act cannot be agreed away as you can when it comes to purchases between private individuals, Terese Holmquist explains to Nyheter24.
From cheapest to most expensive – this is how much it is reasonable to pay for different dog breeds
“It’s important to be well-educated”
But beyond laws and regulations, it is also important that you have read and found out all the necessary information before you decide to strike.
– It is important to be well-educated about different breed characteristics. Some breeds are strongly marked by various behaviors that the buyer does not see as desirable, but that it is necessarily a fault of the animal. You should also read about whether there are specific race-related diseases that different races can have challenges with, and this also applies to mixed races, depending on which races have been mixed, she explains.
