The women’s professional ice hockey series PWHL kicked off Finnish time on Monday evening with the match Toronto–New York.
Canadian defender Ella Shelton had the honor of scoring the first goal in the women’s professional ice hockey league PWHL. The PWHL started with the Toronto–New York match on Monday evening Finnish time.
The away team New York won the match played in front of 2,537 spectators 4–0. Tennis legend and PWHL investor Billie Jean King dropped the ceremonial starting puck before the actual fight started.
– That sounds pretty incredible. When I think about it, I just think about our team and how special it has been, Shelton, who finished in the first period, said of his goal.
According to Shelton, the players had guessed before the game who would get the honor of scoring the first hit.
– I don’t think I was at the top of that list, Shelton said.
Alex Carpenter, Jill Saulnier and Kayla Vespa increased the visitors’ lead in the third period.
In addition to Toronto and New York, Boston, Minnesota, Ottawa and Montreal play in the PWHL.
The overwhelming majority of the players in the series are from Canada and the United States, which are the traditional powerhouses of women at the national team level. The only Finnish player in the PWHL is from Minnesota Susanna Tapani.
Minnesota plays its first game the night before Thursday at 2 o’clock Finnish time. The opening match is against Boston.
The regular season of the PWHL continues until the beginning of May, and after that it’s time for the playoffs.
