Aside from the Marvel Cinematic Universe, another Marvel universe is currently being created at Sony. It started in 2018 with Venom. Last year the next anti-hero joined them: Morbius. The film of the same name turned out to be a disappointment in the cinema, both from a quality and financial point of view. After we get to know the slobbering symbiote Venom, Dr. Michael Morbius (Jared Leto) in Sony’s Marvel universe. He is a renowned doctor, but suffers from one rare blood disease, which affects him physically. As part of his research, he tries to find a cure for his illness.
Morbius doesn’t shy away from any experiment, no matter how dangerous. What follows is the birth of a Marvel villain: the protagonist of the story transforms into one bloodthirsty vampire. However, it soon turns out that he is far from the scariest creature causing mischief in New York.

Just like with Venom, we follow a character who walks between good and evil. Is Morbius a misunderstood hero? Or will his unquenchable bloodlust turn him into a villain who brings nothing but death? Despite this exciting question, the film turns out to be an interchangeable, off-the-shelf superhero adventure.
No wonder Morbius failed at the cinema. Panned by critics, ridiculed by audiences: The film’s budget, excluding marketing costs, was around $75 million. Morbius played a disappointing $167 million one, as Box Office Mojo reports. That barely covers the film and marketing costs. For comparison: Venom grossed $850 million with its first film.
With Morbius becoming a viral sensation on the internet, Sony was encouraged to release the film two months after its original theatrical release to be released again in 1000 cinemas. Morbius flopped a second time, as Forbes reports. Sony’s Marvel universe isn’t over yet – on the contrary.

While only one new MCU film (Deadpool 3) awaits us next year, Sony’s Marvel universe is starting right away three new action adventures through and thus doubles the number of films that have existed to date.
