Israel’s Supreme Court has halted a controversial law that prevents judges from overturning government decisions they deem “unreasonable” and against the country’s constitution.
The court made the decision by a vote of 8–7.
The law enacted in July was the first of Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu’s planned transformation of the Israeli judiciary.
Opponents of the law have argued that Netanyahu’s attempts to prevent judges from stopping laws deemed unreasonable could lead to corruption and the appointment of unqualified people to key posts.
Benjamin Netanyahu has not yet commented on the court’s decision.
The law led to widespread protests in Israel.
