SMHI: Orange snow warning over Dalsland

– During the night, from 19:00 on Sunday until 7:00 on Monday morning, around 15-20 centimeters of snow fell in Dalsland, says meteorologist Emma Härenstam at SMHI.

The greatest snow depth – 43 centimeters – was measured in Krakstad, a couple of miles west of Säffle, in the morning. Bengtsfors had 30 centimeters.

– It is very much and it continues to snow during the day, it will only increase. It’s an easterly wind, which means that the snowfall from Vänern is intensified, what is called Vänersnö and means that you get heavier snowfall – a snow cannon, says Emma Härenstam.

At most, there can be up to half a meter of snow locally in the area, according to SMHI’s weather warning.

Yellow warnings

Vättern also generates heavy snowfall to the west during the day, which affects Skaraborg locally.

In addition to the orange warning for Dalsland, yellow warnings apply to parts of Götaland, Svealand and Gotland.

– In the orange area, you should not go out on the roads unless you have to. In the entire warning area, it is good to think about being out in good time, as there is a risk of delays and accessibility problems. When it’s windy, the roads can quickly snow again after they’ve been plowed, says Emma Härenstam.

In southern Jämtlandsfjällen, a yellow warning has been issued for wind on Kalffjällen. For those who celebrate the New Year there, it is important to cover up properly outdoors, as the strong cooling effect is a risk factor.
