The attack took place on Saturday morning in Belgorod in western Russia, about four miles from the border with Ukraine. A clip, verified by the BBC, shows something crashing down on a busy road in the city. After that, a large cloud of smoke rises from the scene while people run away.
Meeting in the UN Security Council
Russian authorities say at least 18 people have died, including two children. A total of 111 people are said to have been injured.
Now Russia is threatening revenge.
“This crime will not go unpunished,” writes the Ministry of Defense on Telegram.
In addition, Russia requested an extraordinary meeting of the UN Security Council, which took place on Saturday evening.
Extensive Russian attacks
The Ukrainian revenge attack came after nearly 120 Ukrainian towns and villages were hit by widespread Russian attacks on Friday. At least 39 people have died as a result of the attacks, according to Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyi.
Among other things, 16 people have been found dead in Kiev. It is the single deadliest day in the capital in terms of civilian casualties since Russia launched its full-scale invasion of Ukraine in February 2022.
An intelligence source tells the BBC that Ukrainian forces have struck military targets in Belgorod in retaliation for Friday’s attacks. However, Ukraine has not officially commented on the incident.
