Today, perfume, purification and harmony with Joséphine Busquère and the fumigation bouquets from Totem Nature. The fumigation technique is old, it consists of burning herbs or plants and diffusing the smoke to purify the air and chase away bad energies from the house. Sage, thyme, rosemary, cedar wood, fig wood, lavender, fern or poppy, the Totem Nature bouquets are composed of certified organic farming plants with purifying properties.
Everyone can use them according to their desires, beliefs or objectives. According to the founder of Totem Nature, this simple and soothing practice brings us back in touch with nature.
I like creation in the ordinary. I’m not moved by really big things. I am touched by the little ordinary things that we manage to magnify because it takes up 90% of our time. I want the ordinary to be more pleasant, more caring. More attention to the ordinary.
Joséphine Busquère, founder of Totem Nature: “ Totem arrived because I wanted, at my own small level, to restore order and harmony between the top and the bottom. The totem is an alliance between the world above and the world below. It is a rich word that speaks of plant, animal and human unity. It is putting ourselves back into our universe in harmony and not in struggle or exploitation. Do with things and not against or by force “.
Born in Paris, Joséphine Busquère has a relationship with nature steeped in history and oral transmission. A graphic designer by training, she has always wanted to create. She practiced her profession for two decades. The Covid period and the loss of contact with the subject led him towards a professional reconversion. She is therefore looking for a sincere project in order to broaden her artistic research and offer a beautiful fragrant object. Joséphine Busquère launches Nature Totem, a range of six fumigation bouquets, in 2021. The combination of plants for the pleasure of smell, the choice of plants for the strong line of the bouquet determines the well-being objective of each composition. Joséphine Busquère created her bouquets to have a connection with nature by engaging with certified organic farming partners.
“ It was a new object. They didn’t know. There was a dimension of change in the work, the composition more elaborate than what they were doing. We were going to make an object and convey well-being. We did some tests together. We had to be able to produce a certain quantity while maintaining quality, obviously completely artisanal, but without the bouquet costing fifty euros because that takes time. In the development of the project, it’s as if I was only a vector of this outcome. They brought me as much as I served them and I don’t remember who did who, but in any case, we did each other good. The goal is to pass on this good. »
Each bouquet has a goal of well-being and connection with nature, humans and the totem animals which designate the fumigation bouquets: the owl, the hare, the hedgehog, the wolf, the bear and the deer.
“ I searched far and wide and came back to the most obvious and simplest thing : the owl’s bouquet, the bear’s bouquet. And this name suits them perfectly. It’s like a perfume, it’s a whole. They have a name that goes by them. The choices of the animals were first thought out, then later experimented. They are only animals from our forests and not animals, Indians or I don’t know what. Each animal has its energy which goes in the same direction as the plants and it brings its little power to the bouquet. »
“ I will classify them into two parts. There are those that are gentler and there are those that are more energizing. The three little animals : the owl, the hedgehog and the hare will be gentler both in terms of smells and in terms of energies. While the wolf, bear and deer will be more dynamic. Each plant has its virtues. All pines are plants, trees which will work on the lungs, which will purify the lungs. Sage is a magical plant. Cedar is an antiviral. We will choose where to go. »
Joséphine Busquère with Totem Nature offers a range of olfactory objects to purify or perfume your space, but which tame over time.
“ There comes a time when we don’t dare because we don’t know and we don’t know how to use it. Then when we get past the phase of “it’s pretty”, “it’s weird” or “it’s a magic thing, I’m not a magician”, we take it, we burn it, we blow and it ‘is finished. Afterwards, we move around with our little bouquet and we get used to it and we will see that it is very pleasant to do. »
“ Either we know the plants and we know which one we need, or we don’t ask the question, there is one that catches your eye, we take it and it will be good. So, everyone will come in their own way and we must trust each other because it is a natural object and the attraction that we have for this type of thing goes with our needs. Whoever uses it chooses according to the need of the moment, which will not necessarily be the same tomorrow or the day after tomorrow. »
