New MMORPG is now 11 years in development – Where will Camelot Unchained be in 2024?

For many MMORPG veterans, Dark Age of Camelot is one of the best PvP MMORPGs of all time. That’s why there was great joy when the brains behind the game, Marc Jacobs, announced in 2013 that he would build a successor. But where will Camelot Unchained be in 2024?

What kind of project is this?

Vaguely good news and a new beta for 2024

This is what the developers say now: At the turn of 2024, Camelot Unchained still doesn’t have much to show, but the mood in the team and around the game seems to be significantly better than it was a few years ago.

There are a few warm words for Christmas:

“Developing games is a journey full of twists and changes and if you join us on this wild ride, we thank you from the bottom of our hearts. We wouldn’t have it any other way.”

Studio CSE received a large financial injection a year ago at the end of 2022 and now the team says 2023 was a year full of “exciting developments”. We’re looking forward to finally sharing it with the players.

In January 2024 a new build for the “Beta 1 Backer” will be released and a completely new user interface will be presented here (via camelotunchaiend).

This interface is also said to be a strong foundation for 2024.

Mark Jacobs also personally announces “good news” for 2024, but he doesn’t reveal exactly what it will look like.

The battle with the gnawing ravages of time

This is what lies behind it: Overall, “Camelot Unchained” is a sobering example of “MMORPGs that are created through crowdfunding”.

Jacobs and his team have undertaken an extremely ambitious project. They develop their own systems, their own engine and have to contend with a variety of difficulties. Including how to find new developers who want to move far away from the beaten track into the provinces, and how to keep finding new money.

After 11 years in development, Camelot Unchained has the problem that everything that looked “fresh and cool” when it was introduced now seems dated.

I mean, we reported on a first beta on MeinMMO SIX years ago – it feels like it happened in a different universe. Were there cars back then or did people still ride horses or dinosaurs to work?

Although we haven’t heard anything particularly negative about Camelot Unchained in the last year, we’ve actually heard almost nothing from the studio in a year: After the financing round, there was probably a lot of work to be done internally.

Let’s see whether the announced news and updates will draw more attention to the MMORPG again in 2024.

In the worst case, Camelot Unchained could end up like Crowfall – a lot of hope, a long development, with many delays and by the time it is released the game seems so outdated that hardly anyone is enthusiastic about it and it literally falls flat.

That would be a shame for the entire MMORPG genre, but with every passing year this scenario seems to become more likely.
